Are you an artist or crafts person that wants to instruct other adults? To be an effective art or crafts instructor, you need to hone your teaching skills. In this class, you learn how to design your classes so that students will rave about them – because they learned a lot and because you were organized. Foremost, you will design and sequence activities that ensure that students learn what you want them to learn! In addition, you will write a clear class description, create a syllabus or realistic agenda, and generate handouts. Too many students do not return to classes because they didn't learn what they expected to learn, the instructors were ill-prepared, or instructors were not prepared for students’ different skill levels. If you want to teach, this is a great place to start. If you already teach, this class formalizes some concepts for you.
The class is comprised of two 2-hour sessions, plus post-class individual feedback:

Session 1
  • What not to do as an art or crafts instructor
  • Create a course goal and learning objectives for a specific audience (age, experience level, etc.)
  • Design learning activities that help students achieve learning objectives while having fun
  • Timing your activities

Create draft lesson plan for review and revision in Session 2

Session 2
  • Review and revise draft lesson plans
  • Write a course description, syllabus/agenda, and plan handouts
  • Next steps – practicing and making adjustments as needed (timing, activities, etc.)
  • Self-help strategies – checklists, prep, slow/fast learners, memory tricks, etc.
