This month featuring:  Critique
On November 2 our program will include Nancy Bautzmann and Marty Plevel....people who will critique Art items. November’s subject is Holiday themed.  If you have an item that is mostly red, orange, brown please bring it. That includes jewelry or fabric, leather, metal and  including 2D creepy scenes and/or misty landscapes. And of course if you have something with Halloween, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christian or Santa  themed Art.... Please bring that as well. We have many wonderful holidays coming up and I’m sure we would really enjoy holiday themed Art work to view.
Let’s see what our SAAG artists come up with.

President's Report

It's finally starting to feel like Fall.  The mornings are crisp and you can feel it in the air the holiday's are coming.

The SAAG leadership has been busy at work arranging for special events and special promotions to benefit SAAG artists.  Here is a snapshot list of things you might want to watch for:

  • Halloween-SAAG is participating in the Mall center candy giveaway.  They are expecting approximately 800 precious trick or treaters.  The time is 5-7 pm.  Feel free to come by and help hand out candy.  You can dress in costume if you like.
  • November 2nd will be the SAAG regular meeting.  The program will be a critique.
  • November 2nd and 3rd will be the SAAG Open Studio Weekend.  This will take place in the gallery and we will have refreshments, art demonstrations and music entertainment both days.
  • SAAG member, Dave Craighead, is working with Jewell's art shows to give SAAG members a special discounted price to participate in their shows.  See the article in this newsletter for more information.  SAAG is always looking for opportunities for our members.
  • Gallery special promotions have officially started.  Look for ornament trees and special gift tables set up in the gallery.

The Sunrise Rotary club recently invited Melissa Rogers and myself to come speak to their group about SAAG.  They were very receptive and we may be able to partner with them on future endeavors.  If you are a member of a business organization that might be interested in this type of a program please let me know.  We have a prepared presentation (thanks to Theresa Poalucci, our PR chair) that worked very well.

For those of you who helped a few months ago by donating art for the Catalina Foothills Marching Band silent auction to raise money to send the band to New York City to march in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade I wish to thank you again.  Be sure to watch the parade on Thanksgiving morning and look for the band.  It's always a thrill to see local kids being recognized nationally.

I wish all of you a very Happy Halloween and Happy Thanksgiving!

We believe that everyone has a creative side and some of us are just waiting to discover it! The SAAG galley at La Encantada has classroom space in the back of the store. Several of our artists teach classes in this space. There are lots of workshops to choose from and with most of them the student leaves with a finished project and a new skill.
It’s a great way to have fun with friends and spend time at La Encantada with all its restaurants and shops.
You must register online, but it is easy. Just go to and then click on “Classes” in the top menu.

Teaching Art at the SAAG Gallery

It is a great opportunity to share your passion with others, by teaching a class in the back room of the SAAG Gallery at La Encantada! Recently the SAAG Board has agreed to some new shelving in the Gallery which will showcase examples of the art that will be taught. This will go up with the November line up of classes. Further we have new signage at the front door of the gallery listing all the classes for the month.
The SAAG website now has a new application for prospective teachers to fill out as well. Teachers no longer have to make their own flyer. This is being done by our PR committee so that we have a consistent and branded look.
Here are the deadline dates for signing up to teach:
• Deadline for November Classes is October 18
Deadline for Delivering Class Sample(s) to Gallery October 28

Christmas Ornaments

SAAG Gallery accepting Christmas Ornaments
for Sale
starting in October
If you are a member of the gallery and plan to add Holiday Ornaments to your inventory, then you should note that the gallery will place these items on sale starting in October. Ornaments will be displayed on Christmas Trees.
The cost to sell your ornaments will be $5 per month additional rent for 12 ornaments. Depending on participation, that number may be increased.  Each ornament must be tagged with a price and an inventory sheet must be submitted, like any other inventory item. There will also be the usual 20% commission.
Please note, all Christmas Ornaments must also have a bag supplied with them for the customers. Leave your ornaments, bags and inventory sheet in the back as you would with any other item going into the gallery.
If you want to sell for Oct, Nov, and Dec, just pay an additional $15 when you pay your October rent, or you can do $5 per month onto your rent. Please, when paying online add a note to LaVonne about what your additional payment is for.
We will be starting Holiday advertising soon! Our slogan will be “From our gallery to your home for the holidays.” We will be stressing the idea of hand-crafted and original.
If you have any questions, please email Wendy at [email protected]

Artist Opportunities

November 20, 2019
10:00 AM
Do you want to show your work to others?  Are you looking for non-judgmental feedback on your art?  Do you think the experience of other artists could be helpful?  Or perhaps you would just like to discuss art in an open unstructured evnironment.

You will also get to know other members of the Guild in this nurturing setting like never before.

You are welcome at the Non-Critique on the third Wednesday of each month beginning at 10:00 a.m. and concluding no later thank 12:00 Noon.  We will be gathering at the SAAG Gallery of Gifts in the La Encantada Mall (2905 E. Skyline Drive, Suite 262 - Next to Tommy Bahama).  Bring one to three examples of your work or just come to talk about art.  New or old, 2D or 3D work is welcome.

Hope to see you at the Non-Critique.

Call Jim Morris (520) 262-8584 for more information or email:  [email protected]

Starting this Fall season Jewell's Fine Art Festivals is hoping to increase awareness and participation at their shows and is reaching out to SAAG with the idea of developing an ongoing relationship between the two organizations.  Jewell’s has been doing art fairs in Tucson for 22 years and is interested in promoting local and visiting artists, as well as emerging or returning artists.

Jewell’s is offering a large 10x30 space to the guild with no commitment, hoping that SAAG members can come together and fill this space as a group to show and sell their work.  The cost for this space would only be $450 and up to 9 (or more?) artists could conceivably share and show in this space, which could bring the cost down to as little as $50 per artist for a weekend show.

Should there not be enough interest to fill the entire space, smaller spaces could still be considered at steep discounts as well – a 10x20 for $300, or a 10x10 for $150.  These rates are for the Guild as a group to have multiple artists take advantage of the reserved space.  Individual artists who want their own booths will receive a 10% discount on their spaces.  If there isn’t a lot of interest around a particular show it wouldn't cost SAAG a thing and the 3 spaces that JFAF reserves for SAAG would be made available to other artists.

I'm hoping to work out a win-win for all - where JFAF draws more artists and vendors to develop larger shows, which will hopefully draw larger crowds, and SAAG members get opportunities to do shows as a group for a small amount of money.

Seeking Door Prizes for upcoming OPEN STUDIO WEEKEND
SAAG is looking for donations of art for the upcoming Open Studio Weekend at the Gallery. SAAG member Lawrence Peters has been working on sponsorships for the organization and has collected some outside prizes including a $50 Gift Certificate from Posner’s Art Supply and two sets of tickets for two to a Fox Theatre production. (Thanks Lawrence).
We also have some donations from gallery artists, but we would like to increase the number of prizes to give away at the end of the event on Sunday, November 3.
If you are interested in making a donation, please email Melissa at [email protected]. Let her know what your are donating and the value. Please leave your prize in the back room of the gallery marked “Door Prize for Open Studio Weekend.”
Thanks in advance for your generosity.
