President's Report

Happy New Year Everyone!!!!

It's hard to realize that it's 2020.  The date sounds like something out of a Science fiction movie.  But, here we are living it.

SAAG has had a fantastic year in 2019 with alot of fantastic changes.  Upgrading our gallery from the Casas Adobes location to our beautiful La Encantada location was the best move we could have made for this stage of growth for our guild.  Leaving our old location with 30 artists displaying to now over 90 fabulous artist in the new location.  Wow!

The Guild's membership has also increased from just over 100 members at the beginning of the year to now over 230 artist members.

Our meeting location at the new gallery has also worked out great.  We had a few growing pains along the way but things are adjusting well.

SAAG continues to try and find and  offer opportunities for our artist to grow.  Most current is the Exhibition opportunity at he Overlook restaurant at the Oro Valley Community Center restaurant.  Please look for that information in this newsletter.  There are also many other opportunities that you should check out in this newsletter.

It's also that time of year when the SAAG nominating committee is sending a call out for interested members in serving on the SAAG board.  Check out the article in this newsletter.

As you can tell the theme of my report this month is to CHECK OUT THIS NEWSLETTER!  It's full of important information and opportunities for you, our members.

Together we can make 2020 as great or better than 2019.

Jeanie Merideth
SAAG President 2019-2020

We believe that everyone has a creative side and some of us are just waiting to discover it! The SAAG galley at La Encantada has classroom space in the back of the store. Several of our artists teach classes in this space. There are lots of workshops to choose from and with most of them the student leaves with a finished project and a new skill.
It’s a great way to have fun with friends and spend time at La Encantada with all its restaurants and shops.
You must register online, but it is easy. Just go to and then click on “Classes” in the top menu.

Teaching Art at the SAAG Gallery

It is a great opportunity to share your passion with others, by teaching a class in the back room of the SAAG Gallery at La Encantada! Recently the SAAG Board has agreed to some new shelving in the Gallery which will showcase examples of the art that will be taught. This will go up with the November line up of classes. Further we have new signage at the front door of the gallery listing all the classes for the month.
The SAAG website now has a new application for prospective teachers to fill out as well. Teachers no longer have to make their own flyer. This is being done by our PR committee so that we have a consistent and branded look.
Here are the deadline dates for signing up to teach:
• Deadline for February Classes is January 17
Deadline for Delivering Class Sample(s) to Gallery January 27
• Deadline for March Classes is February 14
Deadline for Delivering Class Sample(s) to Gallery February 24
• Deadline for April Classes is March 13
Deadline for Delivering Class Sample(s) to Gallery March 23
Please check out all the guidelines online!

Special Event

SAAG sponsors

La Encantada Fine Art Festival

January 18 & 19, 2020 • Saturday, 10:00 AM-5:00 PM •
Sunday, 11:00 AM-4:00 PM

This year, with the relocation of the SAAG Gallery to La Encantada, the Guild will be one of the sponsors for the La Encantada Fine Art Festival. One of the benefits of this sponsorship is that we were able to submit names of emerging artist to the Southern Arizona Arts and Cultural Alliance, which we did. Some of our artists were chosen to participate and we are very proud of all of them.
During the event our organization is providing all the entertainment. SAAG has arranged for emerging musicians from the Catalina Foothills High School, thanks to our President Jeanie Meredith, to provide the music for this event.
We also will have a tent, right next to the entrance of the gallery that weekend for artists demonstrations. We must fill this with exciting demonstrations and we have a sign up sheet in the back room of the gallery. This opportunity is only open to current gallery artists, as they are already in the inventory system.
Here is what the demonstrating artist gets:
• Your time and description of what your are demonstrating to be published in our OV Voice ad. All spots must be filled by Dec. 30 for the newspaper deadline.
• Extra inventory! During your shift you can opt for either a small 4’ table or 32” by 6’ tall (2 sided) grid to display extra items, however these extra items must be in the inventory for selling.
Here is the schedule and there is only one spot available for each time:
Saturday 18: 10 am to Noon
Saturday 18: Noon to 2 pm
Saturday 18: 2 pm to 5 pm
Sunday 19: 10 am to Noon
Sunday 19: Noon to 2 pm
Sunday 19: 2 pm to 4 pm
If you have further questions or want to schedule your time and can’t make it to the gallery, call Theresa Poalucci at 206-255-4483.
If you have a website and are willing to put some information about this event on it, please email Theresa and she will send you a jpg file with all the information on it, including adding your demonstration time if you decide to demonstrate.

Teaching Classes

Teaching Classes through SAAG
Did you know that all SAAG members have an opportunity to teach classes at the SAAG Gallery. We have a backroom that has been utilized for this purpose already. The space can accommodate up to 12 students.Various artists have given classes on acrylic painting, alcohol inks, felting, jewelry making, ceramics, paper quilling, photography and more.
We now have a glass shelf at the back of the gallery that artists use to display what they are going to teach. We also have a monthly ad in the Desert Leaf about our classes. Our PR committee puts together a flyer for each class which is also displayed and these flyers are sent out once a month to SAAG’s email list.
If you are interested in teaching a class, you need to apply online at Click on classes and then under Quick Links, choose “Application for Teaching Classes Through SAAG.”
For more information, please email Marnie Ehlers our class director at [email protected].

Art Article

Sculpture on Campus Program

Pima's Sculpture On Campus initiative, which began in 2004, is based at its East Campus, 8181 E. Irvington Road.  The program provides an exciting opportunity for artists to present their contemporary outdoor sculptures to the public in a beautiful, educational setting.

Artists are given the opportunity to exhibit their art to the general public in a partnership that turns the East Campus into an open access gallery and extension of the artist’s studio. This venue for viewing and appreciating public sculpture enriches student, faculty and staff cultural life and is also an established and valuable art resource for Tucson’s East Side residents.

Each piece selected for this loaned sculpture program is displayed on the campus and is protected by insurance provided by the College.

For more information see

The 2020 Call to Artists is now open, inviting artists to participate in the College’s Sculpture On Campus exhibition.
The 2020 Call to Artists will close January 23, 2020 at 4:45 p.m. and selected artists will be notified by February 18, 2020.  The public reception for artists and the public is planned for October 29, 2020.

Dear Fellow Artists,

The Southern Arizona Watercolor Guild is planning to have another Share Our Walls Show in September, 2019. We are excited to be offering this very successful exhibit to your members again. Our hope is to connect with artists across southern Arizona and build relationships with the greater Tucson art community. We are attaching the Call to Artists and an Entry Form to this email. Additional materials are available on our website – – on the shows page. The show will hang in September with an entry due date of August 14. The show will be juried and judged for cash awards.

Starting this Fall season Jewell's Fine Art Festivals is hoping to increase awareness and participation at their shows and is reaching out to SAAG with the idea of developing an ongoing relationship between the two organizations.  Jewell’s has been doing art fairs in Tucson for 22 years and is interested in promoting local and visiting artists, as well as emerging or returning artists.

Jewell’s is offering a large 10x30 space to the guild with no commitment, hoping that SAAG members can come together and fill this space as a group to show and sell their work.  The cost for this space would only be $450 and up to 9 (or more?) artists could conceivably share and show in this space, which could bring the cost down to as little as $50 per artist for a weekend show.

Should there not be enough interest to fill the entire space, smaller spaces could still be considered at steep discounts as well – a 10x20 for $300, or a 10x10 for $150.  These rates are for the Guild as a group to have multiple artists take advantage of the reserved space.  Individual artists who want their own booths will receive a 10% discount on their spaces.  If there isn’t a lot of interest around a particular show it wouldn't cost SAAG a thing and the 3 spaces that JFAF reserves for SAAG would be made available to other artists.

I'm hoping to work out a win-win for all - where JFAF draws more artists and vendors to develop larger shows, which will hopefully draw larger crowds, and SAAG members get opportunities to do shows as a group for a small amount of money.
