Artist Statement
Ana has enjoyed photography for over 35 years. Mostly self-taught, she uses the camera to portray the world as it can still be found in some corners of the planet.
Having always been interested in the natural world, her photographic images reflect that interest. She works to capture the ‘feel’ of old buildings, the power and grace of wild animals, the colors and shapes of flowers, and the beauty of patterns in nature.
When digital photography became ‘the way to go’, Ana commented to friends that digital photography’s popularity would develop an increased appreciation of black and white, historic and traditional photography processes.
After reluctantly moving from analog to digital photography, she felt something was missing in her work. Eventually, Ana immersed herself in historic photographic processes, particularly hand colored Cyanotype and Van Dyke prints.
She now uses her digital camera to create images, perhaps apply some digital manipulations and create negatives. Then, it is off to the darkroom!
Ana was a Polaroid Creative Use Consultant and led workshops on Emulsion and Image Transfer processes using the now gone Polaroid 669 film. She led workshops at The Print Center in Philadelphia, Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts, Highland Cultural Center, Somerset Art Association, Garrison Arts Center, and at local camera clubs in the in Tucson and the NYC tri-state area. She also led private workshops to suit the student’s schedule and interests.
Ana’s received a Special Opportunity Stipend grant by the NY Foundation for the Arts and the NYS Council for the Arts, the Phillip Isenberg Memorial Award (1st prize in photography) at the Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit and 2nd prize in photography at the Housatonic Art League Art Show.
One of the premier stock agencies for nature photographers, Animals Animals/Earth Scenes, has represented her work since 1989.
