Artist Statement

I found my 35-year career as a commercial artist very rewarding, but in retirement I’m enjoying the freedom to choose how, when and what I create.

All art is an abstraction from reality. The difference is how much abstraction is taking place. I use a vivid color palette and strong graphic movement to capture a moment in time and convey my impressions of the subject. I work in both oil and acrylic paints, sometimes a combination of the two, often adding textural pastes.

My favorite subject is the flora and fauna of the Sonoran Desert which surrounds our home. I love our colorful desert sunsets and the delicate blooms and intricate texture of the cacti. Also the unique animals, lizards and birds that are adapted to living in the harsh climate of the desert.

This quote from Thomas Merton aptly describes my philosophy towards my art.

“Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.”

  • Soaring Violetear, Oil, 8"x8"

In 2024, I completed a series of 15 hummingbird paintings in oil. I was amazed by variety of these vibrant little creatures.

  • Harris Hawk in my Back Yard, Acrylic, 15"x30"

I've watched Harris hawks from my back yard the past several years. It's interesting how they hunt in pairs and small groups. Mated pairs are monogamous and usually stay together for life.

  • Jim's Agave, Mixed Media Acrylic, 24"x24"

This was a commission for a friend with a gorgeous American Agave in his front yard. I used a technique I learned in one of my art classes. The painting is built over a colorful background described as chaos. It's so much fun having the background peek through.
