Artist Statement

All my life I have been making art with everything I could lay my hands on. I am fascinated with animals and nature, and I see adventures in every kind of art medium.

All my artwork is marinated in and flavored by my spiritual life. I use animals and nature to share my deep sense of mystery, story, humor and partnership with God.

Much of my 2D work is landscape, born from my love of driving all over and being swept up in the beauty I see. I enjoy making huge works that feel like all outdoors, and tiny gems that put a world in the palm of your hand.

My 3D work is born from picking up a bit of driftwood, and eggshell, an old can and thinking, “I wonder who lives in this?” I love to start with such an item and sculpt the animal that wants to live with it, telling the story of that animal’s personality and life.

I also love to create life-size animals to dwell in the homes and yards of people who want to share their space with some creature from outside. I love the sense of whimsy and wonder that comes with such a special guest. Or sometimes I might paint a little beast inside the drawer of a desk, or on the wall behind a light fixture.

I adore the thrill of learning a new medium, or picking one up that I haven’t played with for a while. I do acrylic painting, calligraphy, silk painting, colored pencil, scratchboard, ceramics, mosaics, tapestry, epoxy, resins, eggshell carving, leatherwork and many more.

  • "Behind You" Photo Collage

This mysterious cougar is made up of stones, bones, holes, tracks, weeds, droppings and air. You can look right at him, but you won't see him.

  • "Evening Prayer" Driftwood and epoxy resin

This tiny leopard is perched on a bit of driftwood, suspended in a shadowbox against the velvety black night sky.

  • "Peace" Architectural Gypsum.

This low-relief sculpture makes welcoming eye contact with your guests as they enter.
