Artist Statement

I have been a “maker” my entire life, starting with learning to sew doll clothes on my grandmother‘s Singer treadle sewing machine, moving on to sewing my own clothes.

My mother was an artist who worked in several media—painting and clay. I had access to potter’s wheels, clay and glazes as a child, and thought everyone had these, too.

Our entire family had great fun doing raku firings in our backyard, where my father converted a barbecue.

It wasn’t until later that I understood what a gift my mother had given me—the gift of exploration through art! In my working life, I managed programs that helped at-risk and low income families reach for self sufficiency.

Now that I am retired, I have gone back to exploring myself and the world through my art making. I paint (usually acrylics parentheses) take photographs, and work with fabric.

My father built me and my twin sister each spinning wheels, on which we then taught ourselves to spin yarn from different fibers. It’s about the journey.
